Yesterday, at long last, I was able to pick up my new SUV from South Dock - a 2004 Jeep Liberty in that most suitable colour for an island vehicle, white (it doesn’t show the dust as much as darker colours ).

You can buy vehicles here of course, but choice is limited and prices high, so often it pays to import something from Florida, which is what I did.

I used a Florida-based export agency - Americarr - you tell them what kind of vehicle you are looking for, and your budget, and they will basically go and find something to match. Then they handle the whole export process, including shipping. The only downside is that you have to trust them to get it right as you don’t have the opportunity to inspect the car yourself.

The whole process was fairly painless, although there was a delay of about six weeks waiting for the title documents to come through from the auction house. Oh and paying roughly 45% import duty wasn’t much fun either!! But the Jeep Liberty I wound up with is in good shape, had only one previous owner and a clean Carfax record, so overall I’m happy. And I saved probably a couple of thousand dollars compared to buying something similar here - even if I could have found one.

Living in Long Bay as I do, where the roads are compacted rock with a good selection of potholes and no tarmac surface, a vehicle that has high ground clearance and is good on the rough stuff was a must. So here she is:

He’s a Tropical House Gecko - there are several in the house, and you often see them running up the walls, but not usually out in the open like this.

He was quite willing to pose - even when I brought the camera very close.

For those of you that are interested in the technicalities, these images were taken with a Canon G9 point-and-shoot, set to F2.8 at 1/60th sec, ISO 80, macro mode, with a Canon 550EX flash off-camera connected to the hotshoe by a connector cord. The flash illumination was bounced off a white wall.

As some of you may know, I am a member of the Digital Wedding Forum, a worldwide association of professional photographers who mainly shoot weddings and portraits.

This year of course was a Leap Year, so DWF member Peter Finger suggested that DWFers around the world should all contribute one or two photographs from their locales to celebrate the unique day of February 29th 2008! The only rule was that the images had to be shot during that 24-hour period (in the photographer’s respective timezone).

A good number of talented people participated, and I’ve put the results together into a slideshow:

A bigger version can be viewed here in a separate window.

It was lots of fun, as well as being a challenge to take pictures that represent “my place”. Looking forward to the next one!

Only 5 weeks to the show! In case you haven’t heard, the art of pantomime is back in the TCI!

Two years ago, John Garvin and his motley crew of amateur actors put on the first pantomime to be performed in Turks & Caicos, “A Caribbean Cinderella”, under the aegis of the Turks & Caicos Friends of the Arts Foundation - and it was a huge local hit, though a transfer to Broadway sadly didn’t happen…

This year the show is bigger and better, and has a pirate theme….

Unfortunately due to work commitments I couldn’t get involved in the actual production, but I have been helping out with the publicity side, taking photos of the cast, designing the poster and T-shirts and the show programme.

To help promote the show, I’ve also created some computer wallpaper images of the key members of the cast (you can also use them in a screensaver if you want). These are FREE for you to download and use, though please don’t post them on another website without asking me first.

The show is happening at Brayton Hall on Providenciales in early December 2007 - ticket reservation information is here.

Here are the wallpaper images (click to view, or right-click and choose “Save Link As” or “Save Target As” to download) - all are 1024 x 768 pixels.
